We work just as hard as male athletes. We run, train, and push our bodies to the limit just as they do, so why don’t we get equal VISibility? Women make up 40% of participants in sports, but only receive 4% of sports media coverage. As athletes we know that if you can’t see it, it’s harder to be it. Having access to watching sports is important to get inspiration and improve our game. So here are our 5 go-to platforms to stream women’s sports.
1. ESPN Select
For $12.99 a month, we can get access to thousands of women’s events not aired on cable, all of ESPN’s award winning “30 for 30” documentaries and all your favorite ESPN studio shows. In ESPN Select’s first 9 months, the streaming service offered 7,000 hours of women’s sports coverage. And for any aspiring ACC Athletes or ACC fans, ESPN Plus’ ACCN channel is providing a full slate of women’s collegiate field hockey, soccer and volleyball.
CBS All Access gives us the best of both worlds by offering past recordings of games as well as live coverage. This was one of the only ways to watch the NWSL Challenge Cup this year. For $5.99 a month, we can relive all the NWSL action!
3. CBS Sport
We can still watch some of our favorite live sports even if we're ballin' on a budget. This online streaming platform allows you to watch live sporting events free of charge. We just need to have a supported cable provider, and boom we’re watching the WNBA or NWSL action live!
4. Peacock
We are loving the sports content on Peacock. Rewatch your favorite Olympic events, stream exclusive sports documentaries or tune in to live sports coverage.
5. Amazon Prime
Thought Amazon Prime was just for fast shipping? Think again! Amazon Prime members get access to a number of live sporting events including Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball. Not to mention we can set up a CBS All Access account with our prime membership.
“The lack of female athlete coverage makes it difficult for girls to imagine themselves as athletes”
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s no shortage of news about the restart of male leagues like the NBA or MLB, but women’s sports are uniquely vulnerable to the pandemic, and deserve equal media recognition. Even before COVID-19, finding women’s sports coverage was scarce. This lack of airtime has an impact way beyond the TV screen. Less coverage means less role models, less revenue and less opportunity to show the world that female and male athletes are EQUAL.
Now more than ever, we are committed to bringing more VISibility to women’s sports. So let’s tune in and stand up! Together we can raise awareness and demand for women’s sports coverage.
